Celebrate Saint Paddy’s With These 3 Irish Whiskey Cocktails

Everyone’s favorite Irish holiday is right around the corner! St. Paddy’s Day on March 15th is always a fun time to wear green, bring out the green beer, and celebrate with friends; and what better way to do that than with an authentic Irish whiskey cocktail?

While Irish whiskey is known for being light and slightly honey-flavored, modern renderings offer a wider variety of flavors – from dried spices to fruits and everything in between. All of this combine to make one killer cocktail ingredient (and a perfect one to celebrate St. Paddy’s with)! Here are three delicious Irish whiskey cocktails to mix with this underappreciated whiskey category for St. Paddy’s Day.

Irish Coffee

If you know one cocktail traditionally made with Irish whiskey, it’s the Irish Coffee. While you can spike coffee with any whiskey, a true Irish Coffee is made with its namesake spirit. First created by an Irish bartender at a harborside bar in the ‘30s to invigorate weary nighttime passengers, the mixture is equally effective today!

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz Irish whiskey
  • 4 oz coffee
  • 0.5 oz simple syrup
  • Whipped cream
  • Grated nutmeg (for garnish)

How to Make It:

  1. Pour the simple syrup and whiskey into a glass mug, then add the coffee.
  2. Fill the small half of a cocktail tin halfway with heavy cream. Shake the cream in the shaker until it is almost solid (you’ll be able to hear the difference).
  3. Top the coffee off with your shaken cream. If done correctly the whipped cream will sit on top of the coffee and create two distinct layers.
  4. Grate fresh nutmeg on top of the cream and serve.

Jameson & Ginger

The Jameson and Ginger is ultra-simple, and exactly what it sounds like: Jameson Irish Whiskey and ginger ale. It is an easy way to display Jameson in a semi-sweet, tall drink that’s both pleasant and super easy to make.

Ingredients:

How to Make It:

  1. Pour the whiskey into a highball glass filled with ice.
  2. Fill with ginger ale.
  3. Squeeze a lime wedge over the drink and drop it in.
  4. Stir, serve, and enjoy!

Irish Old Fashioned

The beauty of an Old Fashioned is that it works with nearly any spirit, with the sugar and bitters brightening the inherent flavors of whichever base you choose. But if you’ve got a spirit you really love (in this case, Irish whiskey!) there’s no need to limit yourself to simple syrup. Warming honey syrup, herbal green Chartreuse, and the subtle touch of mint garnish all bring out the best in this particular cocktail.

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz Irish Whiskey
  • 1 tsp honey syrup
  • 1 tsp green Chartreuse
  • 1 tsp Dolin Genepy Des Alpes
  • 1 mint sprig, for garnish

How to Make It:

  1. Add all ingredients to a rocks glass.
  2. Add ice and stir briskly until chilled and mixed thoroughly.
  3. Garnish with a mint sprig.
