If we agreed, we’d go for it. Out of three options that were very different from one another it wasn’t only unanimous, it was a blowout. One a Ruby Port finish, one a Banyuls finish, and one a Midwinter Night’s Dram finish. We tasted these blind with very little information up front, and it was NO CONTEST. If you enjoy \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.breakingbourbon.com\/tnt\/high-west-a-midwinter-nights-dram-act-7-scene-6\"\u003eMidwinter Night’s Dram\u003c\/a\u003e\u003cspan\u003e - a rye finished in French Oak port barrels with a heavy wine influence - just imagine layering that deliciousness onto a bourbon backbone with more balance and that’s what this is. The bourbon influence provides more structure, but the wine influence is still prominent. The balance is so much better that even those who find Midwinter Night’s Dram to be overly influenced by wine should find much to love with this pick.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eFor the sticker we kept this one simple. Playing off the concept of the Antelope featured on the front of the American Prairie bottle, we wanted to highlight the experimental nature of the ex Midwinter Night’s Dram barrel finish. We landed on a simple caution sign that captured all of the elements - the Antelope, the nature of the experimental finishing and the fact that Midwinter Night’s Dram plays off the play, Midwinter Night’s Dream hence the “Playwrite” aspect. tour and process. Right now, Bulleit is closed for visitors so the place was a ghost town and we had it all to ourselves. We assembled everyone at the visitor center and walked over to the bus that takes us to the distillery for the tour. To set the context, this bus is a hybrid and is mostly propane-powered. When Melissa started the bus, you would have thought it was a Mustang GT500 revving up. That certainly wasn't normal. We drove the bus for about 100 yards and she said something wasn't right. So we went out, hopped on the second bus, and the same thing happened. In an effort to not slow things down, we opted to begin tasting and hoped the bus situation would figure itself out. Fast forward, we never got to go on the tour but I received an email from Melissa the next day and she found out that someone had stolen the catalytic converters off both busses! That was a first.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eWe went down to the tasting room and we had samples 1 through 4 available for us. When we got to sample #4, I got the taste and smell of Red Bull. It's not often I pull a note out like that. Folks ended up finding the same note when they got to #4. We then proceeded to keep going and sampled 9 different barrels.  When we got to #5, the entire table looked around and said \"Yep, we're going to go ahead and take this one\". It was a clear winner.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eEvery barrel was 11 years old. We had 2 different mashbills, and (IIRC) only 1 yeast strain for all of them. There was a lot of consistency between the 9 barrels which made it even harder to eliminate some. We eliminated some based on finish or a small flavor nuance. We ended up taking 3 barrels and all of them share some flavor characteristics. The best way to describe it is like an orange gummy that spent its life stuck in a Hot Tamales candy box. There’s a cherry note as well, but it’s more like cherry wood or singed cherry (not cherry candy or soda). Again, quite interesting for straight rye. The taste drives the citrus and zesty oak forward, with earthy and herbal notes dancing on the back palate. And the finish … at first you’d consider it medium\/medium-long in length, but then, the old-fashioned candy spice notes come rolling back.
