Department 66 - Others

About This Item

Overview:  Department 66, the inspiration for our namesake vineyards and winery, is located just two hours north of Barcelona in the Roussillon region of France. Using a blend of 80 – 100 year old vines, Dave Phinney produces red and white wines from grenache, syrah, carignan and mourvedre. We own and maintain 300 acres (120 hectares) of vineyards among the Pyrénées-Orientales mountain range, which were planted more than 60 years ago. The terroir is dominated by black schist, with small deposits of granite and limestone in red, rocky soils known as angile.

Tasting Notes:  Striking a seemingly perfect balance between plushness and precision, the vibrantly crimson colored perfumes with cherry cola and fresh flowers while buttressed with brambly garrigue notes and characteristic flinty minerality. Straightforward and compact, the wine opens with bright raspberry and rhubarb and then reveals more nuanced hints of confectioners chocolate, schist, and dried herbs. Ever-present, is a satisfying vein of acidity that perfectly supports the wine's complexity.

Pairing:  Chicken Pasta with a Bechamel Sauce, Duck Confit
