I’m also impressed by the cherry notes, which fall somewhere between a cherry Pop Tart and a Shirley Temple soda. The finish may not be as long or as spicy as the other selections in the lineup, but honestly, that’s its appeal. Finally, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention honey-maple, which is something I often find on Wild Turkey 101 from the 2000s. \n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\nI’ll have to say, Wes \u0026amp; Co. did a fantastic job singling this barrel out. I’m particularly fond of the soda notes, which transition from cream soda to cola and Cheerwine as the experience progresses. The finish is moderately long with a well-balanced oak presence (reminds me of tasting it in rickhouse A), as well as a subtle, leather-esque fadeaway. \n\u003cp\u003eOverall, this is a crowd-pleaser for sure. The Camp Nelson vibe is undeniable, as is the quality of the profile. At the bare minimum, it was one they talked about for a good bit of time, as I remember the dry spice finish being a highlight topic. Interestingly, that dry spice became more of a ginger ale note after being diluted to 110 proof. But I’m getting ahead of myself. \n\u003cp\u003eThe nose exhibits a number of similarities with the other CNE selections, as it’s loaded with vanilla, cherry, and sweet oak notes. On the palate, the profile grows richer and darker with the addition of silky caramel and nougat. And again, the finish lingers with a slowly diminishing berry ginger ale vibe. I wouldn’t quite call it a long finish, but it’s pushing it. In fact, the minute I tasted this bourbon from a glass, I sent Kurt a text to let him know it was the winner we remembered. Caramel, candy apple, trail mix, and rickhouse oak are the predominant aromas of this Russell’s Reserve private selection. That being said, no single note steals the show, as they seemingly arrive in synchronized harmony. \n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe nose transitions exceptionally well to the taste, with chewy, sweet toffee up front and autumn spice accompanied by dried citrus following shortly behind. And like clockwork, another seamless transition - this time from the palate to the finish. I’m discovering a lot of “toasty” notes here, such as creme brulee, oak, and singed tangerine peel. As for the finish’s duration, it’s just about perfect - far from short and just long enough to keep you hanging on for another sip. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you’re interested in this Russell’s Reserve Single Barrel selection, it will be available soon at Keg N Bottle for $99.99. With the base retail price at $72.99, that’s $27 from each bottle going to Riley Children’s Hospital. If that’s too much of an expense to swing, no worries. By that, I mean its profile is undeniably Wild Turkey but with a Camp Nelson twist. This was Col. Lee’s favorite barrel back when we selected these in Tyrone’s rickhouse A. After retasting, it all makes sense. The nose is a caramel \u0026amp; toffee bomb, with some oak-driven ripe orchard fruit for good measure (apple, orange, cherry). The taste takes many of those same notes and “bakes” them, turning caramel to brown sugar, toffee to Biscoff cookie, and the orchard fruit to glazed citrus. And just when you think the notes couldn’t get more dynamic, the back palate and finish hits like a fancy spiced cola.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eOne of my favorite things about the Year of Camp Nelson series is the sheer variety of flavor. “The Colonel” shines in this department, as it’s the only barrel with this level of Turkey DNA. I’m tempted to call it the “Camp Nelson Corner Barrel.” Is it too soon to label such? Its name, as well as “Delta Blues,” stems from my travel woes due to the federal government shutdown last fall. Instead of flying back home, I hitched a ride with Bryant (thanks again, sir). But I digress … Let’s talk cherry. Nose = cherry. Taste = more cherry. Finish = even more cherry. Naturally, this whiskey showcases plenty of notes besides cherry. It’s more of a strong accent than a foundation, though it gives this barrel a unique identity so it’s worth noting. Caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, and oak all play their part in the symphonic union, though cherry is without question the star of the show. \n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhether or not this barrel is for you depends solely on your sipping preferences. If you’re a fan of dark fruit, I think you’ll be more than satisfied with this one. If, however, you prefer more traditional bourbon notes and\/or a stronger volume of barrel spice, the other CND picks are safer bets (not to mention one or two of the CNEs).
