Top 10 Canned Cocktails for 2019: No Bartender Needed!
Cocktail revolution, meet can revolution! Canned cocktails are booming right now, and it seems like new ones are popping up constantly. Historically, many canned cocktails had muted flavors and lower ABVs than their freshly made equivalents. Now, thankfully, creative companies are perfecting the ready-to-drink format, and canned bevs have gone from painful to drink to absolutely delicious – some are pretty boozy, too, so be sure to check labels before casually cracking into that second can! Here’s our list of 2019’s top 10 canned cocktails you can buy right now.
Slow and Low Rock & Rye
84 proof whiskey in a can? Count us in. Hochstadter’s puts their Slow & Low Rye together in a small 100ml can with oranges, straight rye whiskey, raw honey, angostura bitters, and rock candy. The result is a bright, citrusy, sweet, and easy to drink. Rock and Rye has a history dating back to the era before prohibition, a period so long ago that doctors once prescribed it as a cure for things like sore throats and common colds. Don’t let the diminutive size of this little can fool you, though: it boasts a 42% ABV!
Cutwater Spirits Spicy Bloody Mary
Originally started under the umbrella of craft beer king Ballast Point, this San Diego-based distillery branched off in the past year and has quickly become one of our favorite local brands. They now offer up all of the same quality canned cocktails in 12-ounce ready-to-drink containers. In our opinion, they just might be the closest you’ll get to a bar-made cocktail. The Spicy Bloody Mary, for instance, is made with their Fugu Vodka mixed with their own house-made Bloody Mary mix that features ripe tomatoes, pepper, and spices. To top it off, this particular drink from the distillers boasts a 10% ABV.
Novo Fogo Sparkling California
If you're not already familiar with Brazil's tasty, beloved national cocktail, the caipirinha, we suggest you get acquainted ASAP! Rather than using familiar spirits like whiskey, rum, or gin, this can uses a popular Brazilian sugarcane spirit called cachaça (Novo Fogo Silver Cachaça, to be precise). Novo Fogo combines this spirit with a natural lime flavor, some sugar, and carbonation for a refreshing, light drink. Watch out for the ABV – this measures in at 11%.
Half-Seas Paloma Sparkling Canned Cocktail
The Half-Seas Paloma Sparkling Cocktail combines tasty Mexican tequila with tart and refreshing grapefruit soda, pure cane sugar syrup, and zesty lime for a wildly delicious riff on the margarita's sassier cousin. This is a great canned cocktail to sip on the beach or during an afternoon picnic at the park.
Fisher Island Lemonade
This is no Mike’s Hard Lemonade. This is just lemonade — really good lemonade! A mix of vodka, whiskey, and lemonade, it’s an easy-to-drink, light, and refreshing mixed cocktail that is an excellent companion to a hot summer’s day (or any day, for that matter). Don’t let the drink’s innocent roots fool you though, it definitely packs a punch with a whopping 9% ABV in a 12-ounce can!
Interboro Gin & Tonic (Hibiscus & Lime)
This one's for you, gin and tonic lovers! Startling in the best way, this flavored G&T hits your palate like a bouquet of hibiscus flowers that’s been soaking in lime juice. Refreshingly crisp with a bubbly bite, this makes a great day or night companion, whether you’re sunbathing by the pool or headed to a backyard party. We love its portability in the can but recommend pouring this one over ice to view its bright pink hue (yes, this cocktail is bright pink!) and let its freshness breathe a little.
Can Can White Linen
Don’t let the name throw you – this delicious canned cocktail is a must-try. Can Can is a small startup based out of Sacramento, California that came to life via Kickstarter and only produces about 3000 cans per batch, meaning getting your hands on one can be difficult. Can Can’s latest batch, the White Linen, is made with vodka, fresh cucumbers, elderflower, lemon, and gin botanicals for a perfectly refreshing any-season cocktail. If this flavor doesn’t sound like your jam, try their boozy Boar’s Bourbon spiked root beer – your inner kid will thank you!
