Description

Overview: UNITING WEST COAST VOLCANICS Over twenty years ago, Obsidian's founders planted a vineyard on an old, abandoned walnut orchard 2,640 feet high in the Mayacamas Range of California. They soon discovered that they were farming on a volcano, on a ridge of solid black obsidian glass. The extreme climate, altitude, and volcanics result in a cabernet sauvignon like no other.

Driven by curiosity about geology and plate tectonics, the team at Obsidian have sought out the people and wines of volcanic vineyards around the globe. Recently, their travels focused closer to home, to the chain of volcanoes stretching northward from California through Oregon and into Washington, all formed by collision of three tectonic plates off shore--the Triple Junction. They found an exciting community of collaborators, and distant sites that had more in common with each other than with neighboring valley vineyards. An idea was born to bring together these sites in a wine that unites West Coast Volcanics.

Tasting Notes: Triple Junction unites the distinct characters of each region with a thread of volcanic minerality, freshness and structure that runs through the wines from all three sources. Cabernet Sauvignon from Obsidian's own Estate Vineyard in California lends structure to the blend. Malbec from Washington’s Red Mountain AVA fills the blend with dense, rich, round fruit flavors while Tempranillo from Echo West Ranch in Oregon weaves in spice and savory character. Aged for 12 months in oak barrels made in Hungary derived from trees grown in volcanic soils, this wine tells a cohesive story of high, dry slopes, and the intensity, structure, and acidity born from vines grown on the side of a volcano.
