Description

Overview: Located three hour drive north of Milan, Valtellina is one of the northernmost winegrowing regions in all of Italy. It is the definition of an Alpine region, and it certainly boasts some of the highest altitude vines of Italy, with plantings between 230 and 765 meters (750 - 2,500 ft). Winegrowing here predates Roman times. The vineyards here are planted along the southern-facing slopes of the Adda river on steep, walled terraces. As you might imagine, they are extremely difficult to work, impossible to mechanize. The primary grape here is Nebbiolo (aka Chiavennasca), and the soils are mostly schist and and granite. The appellation Valtellina Superiore DOCG is furtherly divided in 5 sub-zones: Valgella, Sassella, Inferno, Grumello and Maroggia. Valtellina offer an Alpine expression of Nebbiolo, light, delicate with plenty of aromatic details and long aging potential.

Tasting Notes: Medium deep ruby red colour with an orange rim. Mature nose offering dried cherry, red berries, pepper, clove and cocoa notes. Vibrant palate, still youthful yet with ripe tannin, a fresh acidity with fresh and vibrant red fruit flavours. Good vigor with fine spiciness and a long pure finish.

Pairing: Lamb
