Mauro Veglio - Castelletto - Barolo
Description
Overview: Castelletto is a vast area that winds between Monforte d’Alba and the frazione of Perno along the confines of Serralunga d’Alba. Here, we cultivate about four hectares of vineyards that lay in a southeast position. Beginning with the 1996 vintage, we were the first producers to use this name on the label, and the first with its official recognition. The prevalent amount of sandstone and the well-ventilated microclimate create a tannic Barolo that is very fresh, with balsamic, mint, and eucalyptus notes. About 6,000 bottles released with the potential to evolve in the bottle for many years, but already drinks well and displays a unique personality.
Tasting Notes: One of a series of wines named for their soils, this shows a gravelly, grainy foundation, with sleek cranberry-raspberry fruit above. The herbal components are kept in check but are definitely in the mix, along with tannins that show flavors of stem and bark. With ample aeration the fruit explodes into lovely cherry.
Pairing: Oso buco, cottage pie, veal chops.
