🥃 The Old Hoffman Story

The Old Hoffman name has roots reaching back to the earliest days of Kentucky bourbon history.

The historic distillery site in Lawrenceburg dates to the late 19th century. By the 1890s, Ike and George Hoffman had become involved with the operation, which eventually became the Hoffman Distilling Company.

The Hoffmans became associated with whiskey brands including Old Hoffman and Old Spring, establishing a legacy that survived through changing ownership and multiple eras of American whiskey.

After Prohibition, the Lawrenceburg property was rebuilt and eventually became associated with Ezra Brooks before the distillery ultimately closed in 1979.

But the property's whiskey history wasn't finished.

In 1983, Julian Van Winkle III purchased the dormant Hoffman distillery and renamed it Commonwealth Distillery.

Van Winkle needed a facility where he could bottle barrels of whiskey—including stocks connected to the legendary Van Winkle family's bourbon operations—and the old Hoffman property became an important part of that next chapter.
