The Unique Rye Backset Process

What distinguishes the 2026 release is its use of rye backset during fermentation.

Backset is liquid retained from a previous distillation and introduced into a subsequent fermentation. This traditional whiskey-making technique helps maintain consistency while influencing the character of the finished spirit.

The rye backset contributes additional depth and spice without changing Heaven Hill's traditional bourbon mash bill.

Combined with 14 years of oak maturation, the process produces a distinctive balance of sweetness, seasoned oak, citrus, and warming spice.

Fourteen Years of Kentucky Maturation

The 100 selected barrels were distilled between October 2011 and January 2012 and matured across four Heaven Hill rickhouses:

• Rickhouse M — Third Floor

These varied aging environments helped develop the bourbon's complex character.
