San Simeon - Merlot - Paso Roble
Description
Overview: Our 2019 San Simeon Merlot blends grapes from two estate vineyards in Paso Robles, including Maddalena and Riboli Creston. Both sites feature steep, rocky hillsides with calcareous soils that force struggling vines to reach deep into the ground to absorb nutrients. The upshot is highly concentrated wines that also have a unique mineral character. With warm daytime temperatures and cool evenings, the climate in both vineyards is excellent for nurturing mature Merlot vines. A cool growing season in 2019 gave grapes ample time on the vine to develop color, flavor, acid and tannin. We picked the fruit for this wine in two passes in late September and early October. After harvesting the grapes for this Merlot on two separate dates, we fermented the fruit in stainless steel tanks and transferred the lots to small French and American oak barrels for 10 months of aging.
Tasting Notes: The wine is bright red in color, with a shiny hue and pleasant aromas of red fruits, blueberries and cassis. Similar fruit on the soft mid-palate mingles with notes of fresh earth, forest floor and sweet violet. With nice acidity and a touch of spice, this is a well-integrated Merlot that finishes with soft, round tannins.
Pairing: Pairs well with bacon-wrapped filet steak, meatloaf, and lasagna.
