While most modern Scotch distilleries source malted barley from large commercial maltsters, The Balvenie remains one of only a handful of Scottish distilleries that continues to operate its own traditional floor maltings. This remarkable 12 Year Old takes that commitment even further—it is produced from 100% home-malted barley, combining barley grown at The Mains of Balvenie farm with barley sourced from partner farms and malted using The Balvenie's traditional process.
After distillation in Speyside, the whisky is initially matured in American oak before receiving a finish in ex-Sherry Bodega European oak butts from Jerez, Spain. The combination allows the cereal-rich character of Balvenie's home-malted barley to remain at the center of the whisky while adding layers of dried fruit, creamy toffee, ginger, spice, and Sherry richness.
Bottled at a substantial 47.5% ABV (95 Proof), this release offers significantly more intensity than many of The Balvenie's familiar core expressions, delivering a wonderfully textured combination of honeyed malt, warm biscuit, barley sugar, crystallized ginger, raisins, and aromatic oak.
