Liquor Showcase: Don Julio Reposado Double Cask Tequila

Tequila producer Don Julio has just released its newest addition to the Don Julio family: a limited-edition release named Reposado, Double Cask and the brand’s first new product in six years. Don Julio Reposado Double Cask Tequila gives a nod to Scotland while the reposado cask program serves as an homage of sorts to the company’s founder, Don Julio González. If you’re a tequila lover and don’t mind the occasional scotch whiskey, this is a definite must-try! Here are a few fun facts about the newest Reposado Double Cask from Don Julio.

The Production Process

The Reposado, Double Cask begins maturing in American White Oak barrels for eight months and is finished in Buchanan’s Blended Scotch Whisky casks for an additional 30 days. The resulting product is a rich, complex tequila with smokey Scotch whisky overtones to it.

Since Don Julio González revolutionized the tequila industry in 1942 when he began producing the spirit, the brand has always sought to deliver innovative offerings that are also representative of the quality that Tequila Don Julio has been known for. Master Distiller Enrique de Colsa spent nearly three years perfecting this innovation, constantly experimenting with the vast cask options available within the Diageo portfolio. He landed on casks used in the making of Buchanan’s Blended Scotch Whisky, as he felt they provided a wonderfully complex, new flavor offering that still allows the notes of Tequila Don Julio’s signature Reposado to shine through.

Fun fact: In order for a tequila to be designated a Reposado, it needs to be aged for a minimum of two months, but less than a year, in oak barrels!

The Flavor

The Reposado Double Cask has a remarkable depth of flavor, with honeyed notes of agave and undertones of tropical fruits and spices. The finish is smooth, spicy, and peaty, top-noted with slight hints of chocolate malt. It can be enjoyed neat or on the rocks, according to your preferences.

The new release has an incredibly unique flavor profile, making it a worthwhile tequila to try while supplies last – keep in mind it’s a limited release!

Behind the Brand

The revolutionary tequila brand was founded in 1942 in Jalisco, Mexico, by then-17-year old Don Julio. Little did he know then that he was laying the foundation for what would become the world’s first luxury tequila brand!

When Don Julio González began distilling tequila as a teenager, he didn’t have big business plans; he was simply trying to supplement a weekly income for his family. At a time when it was just a workhorse drink — fiery, raw, and rough around the edges with more than enough kick — Don Julio staked his future on the idea that tequila might someday be savored, sipped, and described in as much loving detail as a fine whiskey.

To fund the production of his new endeavor, Don Julio’s first stop was to ask for a sizable loan from a local businessman. He agreed, and Don Julio’s first tequilas were bottled shortly thereafter. Beyond the standards Don Julio introduced to the industry, which emphasized health and character of the Blue Weber agave itself, the brand fundamentally changed the way consumers regarded tequila and laid the foundation for what we now call “super premium.”
