Mauro Franchino - Gattinara - Nebbiolo
Description
Overview: The Place: Gattinara, Alto Piemonte. In the Northeastern Piedmont, against a backdrop of forested alpine hills on the banks of the River Sesia lies Alto Piemonte. An ancient winemaking region, “Upper Piedmont” was nearly forgotten in the wake of two
world wars, Phylloxera and an economic depression that forced many to abandon their vines in favor of factory work in the neighboring cities. But Alto Piemonte is experiencing a renaissance. Demand has surged for the more elegant styles of Nebbiolo (locally known as ‘Spanna’), less powerful, more poetic than the Barolos and Barbarescos down south. The crown jewel of the region, with ancient volcanic soils spread out over 100 hectares is the
appellation of Gattinara.
Tasting Notes: All the classic notes of graphite, red rose and earthy truffle with whispers of candied citrus, sumac and clove. With present but well integrated tannins, it has all the poise and elegance of Nebbiolo in a style that is open, approachable and expressive.
Pairing: Tagliatelle with game
Points: 88, Wine Enthusiast
